The Artist: Peter Edge
Peter Edge was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, in 1965.
Peter studied Fine Art at North Staffordshire Polytechnic, Stoke-on -Trent, gaining his B.A. (Hons) in 1988. His works have been exhibited all over the UK and as far a field as Russia. In 1996 he became an Elected Member of the Manchester Academy of Fine Art. He has won numerous prestigious awards, including the New Discovery Prize of the Discerning Eye Exhibition, held at the Mall Gallery London in 1995. Most recently, it was the Discerning Eye Exhibition again where he was awarded the Benton and Humphreys Prize. Peter’s work is highly sought after and is held in both Public and Private Collections
Peter draws upon many influences and experiences to produce his paintings. In particular, the use of light and colour in Dutch still life painting has had great influence on his work. Indeed, Peter’s work has been admired for the sensitivity with which he renders light and colour and how he uses these to articulate his various subjects and feelings.
Peter is interested and enjoys the ambiguity that painting can achieve. His images can be read on many levels. There is a strong sense of place and intimacy within his work. It is important that his paintings emanate feelings of stillness and quiet. Ultimately Peter hopes his work can engage, captivate and intrigue the viewer.
The subjects of Peter’s work are various. He uses acrylic paint and thin layers of glaze to obtain the subtle tones in his paintings. Generally, he tends to work in Series’ of paintings, some of which can be viewed in his Archive.
